Our initial Hyundai New Zealand discussions were aided by our existing relationship with the Giltrap Group, who at the time owned 50 per cent of Hyundai New Zealand. At those first meetings I was introduced to Howard Spencer, whose family owned the other half (and several years later bought out the Giltrap Group to take full ownership).

Howard was a very strict businessman, but I enjoyed this. You knew exactly where you stood after every meeting — good, bad or indifferent. In the years to come, I built a strong relationship with Howard, and while the numbers we needed to fulfil our WRC commitment didn’t stack up commercially, Howard backed us and has continued to believe in me. I’ve been fortunate to see the enormous, but often understated, contributions that he and his family have made to so many individuals, charities and organisations. In addition to the financial support he’s provided, his business and moral support has been invaluable.
